Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology
Published in Hardcover by Wiley-Liss (02 January, 1991)
Author: Arthur T. Johnson
Average review score:

An excellent book
An excellent book for graduate medical students.

Excellent, well-researched book loaded with good references.
This book covers quantitative physiology under the particularly stressful conditions of exercise. It is divided into five basic sections: Exercise limitations, exercise biomechanics, cardiovascular responses, respiratory responses, and thermal responses. The author has obviously done a lot of research into the vast body of literature on mathematical modeling of physiological systems. When models are not covered in detail, he gives references to many sources.

As a biomedical engineer, I have used this book regularly to obtain such things as functions describing the relationship of exercise level and oxygen consumption and references to who has done mathematical models of the thermoregulatory system. This book should be on the shelf of anyone who is interested in quantitative physiology, or of engineers designing sports equipment or other similar biomedical devices.

Great motivator!
I picked this journal up for a friend for Christmas. When I got home I was thumbing through it and wanted to keep it for myself. She loved the journal. It has great opening lines to get you to think about what is really important. She is uplifting and lighthearted and most of all funny. Now I am ordering one for myself.

A REAL JOY TO READ!!
Wow - A real affirmation that life is attitude and attitude is a choice no matter what happens. As Barbara says "Pain is inevitable but misery is optional"

The Bread Book: A Baker's Almanac
Published in Paperback by Storey Books (November, 1994)
Author: Ellen Foscue Johnson
Average review score:

Good for beginners
I have three bread books and this is still my favorite. It has an introductory section for beginners and a beginners recipe. The recipes are much easier to follow than those in the bread book put out by Laurel's Kitchen. The recipes are based on baking traditions from around the world and include recipes for batter breads as well as yeast breads.

A baking classic
This was one of my first cookbooks and still one of my favorites. (I have the first edition.) For each month of the year there are 5-6 recipes including (usually) a yeast bread, a sourdough, a quick bread, and a sweet bread--all appropriate to the season. The cheese bread (October) and pumpernickel (November) are favorites! The photos are from the first edition, published in the 70s, and are humorously appropriate to that era--lots of long-haired, peaceful looking types mixing dough out in the woods!

Brian's Bird
Published in School & Library Binding by Albert Whitman & Co (April, 2000)
Authors: Patricia Anne Davis and Layne Johnson
Average review score:

A must have for ANY child
I purchased this book for my six year old nephew who is blind and a bird lover. This book is incredible! The illustrations are wonderful and the story focuses on family togetherness, not just blindness. It is a wonderful book for siblings with differences, any child really.

Brian's Bird: Beautiful Story & Images
Brian's Bird is a wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated picture book. Author Patricia Davis tells a simple direct story while creating many opportunities for visual images. Layne Johnson's striking and colorful photo-like pictures jump to life off the page.

This story of a blind boy who delights in his new pet parakeet is ideal for young readers. The book treats Brian's blindness in a positive manner. The scene in which he uses his sense of touch to solve the mystery of his birthday present gives young readers the opportunity to gain understanding of the special skills of a blind person. The description of how the bird's feet feel on Brian's finger is delightful.

Brian exhibits patience and persistence in teaching his bird. There is humor in the story, as when Brian hears someone calling his name, only to realize it is the bird. Once again, the author highlights the use of an alternate sense.

Brian's brother presents challenges for Brian from the opening pages of the book. Indeed, his brother's actions lead to the bird's flight from the house. The boys work together to solve the problem and sibling teamwork wins the day.

The book presents many opportunities for an adult reading this story to a young child to discuss a variety of issues. The book is also appropriate for young readers up to age 8 or 9 to read on their own.

Brilliant Psychology
A thought-provoking, deep, intellectual and emotional play. Brilliant pyschology, truly. This play is amazing. The depth of exploration of the human mind, and the intricate connections between parents and children, and the reality of this play are genuinely stunning. He's a recluse living in Alaska, she's a runaway bride who can't understand why she left, or where she's going. She stumbles into his life, and together they tread through each other's pasts, trying to find out how to remain stable, grounded, and able to be called alive. I kid you not- read this play.

Intriguing and captivating play!
Fantastic play about two people thrust together in a snow storm in Alaska. A deep look at relationships, inner self and living who you truly are. Truly fascinating and inspiring characters.

Butterfly Wings: A Love Story
Published in Paperback by Writer's Showcase Press (August, 2000)
Author: Kristin J. Johnson
Average review score:

An extraordinary love story
Kristin's debut novel is a stunning literary venture. The metaphors that bind this love story, that shock the senses, and stun ordinary lovers--can easily become a classic in our generation.

To know this author, as I do, her brillance and writing style contain elements that many long-time authors can only dream of achieving.

If you want to learn how excellent writers create characters, develop strong plots and transitional changes, all the while you devour this deeply moving and unusual love story--this is the book for your permanent library.

I predict the screen play will be a hit too!

A Metamorphosis of Love
Kristin Johnson captivates the reader through her realistic characterizations and compelling style. Butterfly Wings is a love story that explores the relationship between Mag, a stunning model, and Serge, a brilliant artist. Serge envelops Mag in his tantalizing cocoon, only to manipulate her, play games, and try to mold her into perfection. Both Meg and Serge undergo spiritual metamorphoses leading to self-revelations.

Johnson's story is a poignant, passionate pursuit of love that will truly entice and entertain readers. Butterfly Wings is a must-read for all romantics.

I absolutely loved this book!

Cabanatuan: Murder Under the Sun
Published in Paperback by Black Forrest Book Promotions (March, 1998)
Authors: Dahk Knox, W.B. Dahk Knox, Jan Lowry, and Deborah Johnson
Average review score:

Absolutely awesome! Super novel with no bull.
If you liked King Rat, you'll be mesmerized with Cabanatuan. Unbelievable and extremely descriptive.

The truth be told.
If there was a question about whether the Enola Gay should have been displayed in the Smithsonian Institution "Cabanatuan, Murder Under the Sun" answers it nicely. After reading this gut wrenching true story about the mistreatment of our prisoners held by Japan during WWII, I have no compassion for this country. If I remember correctly, they started the bloody fray and we finished it. If you are tired of the white washed politically correct versions of WWII and Japan's treatment of our American Prisoners buy this book.
